Me, Myself and I
- This is my first design for the Assignment 1 "Me, myself and I". Although I like a lot of things but I only concentrate on things that start with "H" because my English name is Helen.
- The first thing came into my mind was Helen loves Holland. I draw a wind mill for the "H" and the cow, the tulip, the Dutch lady and the castle for the other letters. But it looks ugly Y__Y, because trying to combine so many things into the same picture makes it look like a mess. Whatever, as Julian said, the first thing is usually not the best.
- Then it came to "Helen loves Halloween". I used to read a lot of ghost stories and detective stories, as well as watching horror movies when I was in Viet Nam. However now I've stopped this habit as living alone in a room on campus makes me feel so scary if I keep reading things like that. But I really like Halloween's decorative stuffs like the pumpkin, the bat, the witch and the spider web. Maybe I'm a bit weird :D.
- I got the idea of hanging the letters on a spider web after Tuong Anh told me she would hang her name on the Christmas Pine tree, as she love Christmas. I love Christmas, too. But I thought everyone loves Xmas, so some people may use it as their design. Can't use a so popular thing like this :)
- I started to know how to use Illustrator 2 weeks ago, after attending the Workshop. So the first times using it were really terrible for me. I spent the whole Friday evening and all Saturday drawing this Helen loves Halloween. It takes me more than 15 hours to finish and more than that ( other assignments and readings keep pushing me to the wall and I had nightmares during nights, in which somebody kept chasing to kill me T__T ). I draw everything from the background to the letters.Ohhh it's good that I finish it now, but I have one more design for this assignment to be due next week.
- But anyway I love to do designing thing so the harder I work, the happier I feel. Once I begin, I can not stop until I finish.
- I want to put the letters in their "natural environment", a dark room in a Halloween night with the candle, the spider web, an old broom, broken chair and table etc. Oh, and because I like things that glitters like gold, diamond or silver so I got the idea of making letters look like the golden ornaments used to decorate. A wind came and made these letter ornaments shaking slightly..
- What is the idea behind this design?
- Hmm... I think it will tell something about the Beauty Beyond, beautiful things in such a poor, old and dirty place. You know beauty can be everywhere, independent to the things surround it. Like a beautiful lotus growing in the mud. The ugly environment only makes it prettier. By the way, my name in Vietnamese and Chinese means "lotus" :"
- One thing I am so worried now is whether the printer can print my picture with the original colors. I hope it wont change my color. If not, things will be bad because the letters will no longer look like "golden" ornament. :(
